Zirconia foam ceramic filters are high-performance refractory components used primarily in demanding metal casting applications (e.g., titanium, superalloys, stainless steel). Functionally, they physically trap solid inclusions (oxides, slag, debris), stabilize molten metal flow (reducing turbulence and gas entrainment), and withstand extreme temperatures (>2000°C) while remaining chemically inert to reactive melts. Structurally, they consist of an open-cell, three-dimensional foam network (typically 5-30 PPI) made predominantly (80-95%) of stabilized zirconia (e.g., Yttria-Stabilized Zirconia - YSZ), providing exceptional thermal shock resistance, high mechanical strength at temperature, and minimal interaction with molten metal. Minor sintering aids (e.g., alumina) may be added, and optional refractory coatings can further enhance performance. This unique combination makes them indispensable for producing high-integrity castings in aerospace, medical, and precision engineering industries.
